Rotate packs as needed, check contacts and place charger in a location where it can be located, not taken into another vehicle. The instrument and the components assigned to it should be in the carrying case so that any shortages would be evident prior to departure.
And finally, obey the safety regulations, and if you doubt the performance, arrange for proper inspection or calibration. A rotary laser gets its value in repeat-ability. Many crews can operate from one reliable geometric reference with disciplined use, documented references and a kit tailored to the task.
Assigning the case to a named crew or vehicle will cut losses even more. A short pre-start inventory shows preparedness before flight when a missing component is still easy to resolve.
